Frilled Shark- A living Fossil

Look at this! Its a Frilled Shark! It appeared a long time ago, so people refer to it as a living fossil. In fact, scientists believe it to be extinct until one appeared in the shallow waters of Japan. It was captured and photographed but died due to poor health a few hours later. Amazing right? It looks so prehistoric and ancient- weird looking creature...

Don't you think that eating shark's fin soup FOC is like eating human's hands presented in front of you FOC ?It's so gross!

We must take action!

I was SO pissed off yesterday.... I couldn't stop my family from eating shark fin soup at a Chinese restaurant, the reason they gave- shark fin soup is expensive, we will be idiots if we don't eat it at a buffet. I just stared at them and watched them eat with a look of disgust on my face. OK, back to business.
Sorry, I have failed as an example. I couldn't get my parents to stop eating sharks fin. But if that's the case, we must all try harder! Why are we doing this to nature? We don't breed them like chickens you know, the finning must stop! Do all you readers get me?! So please join STRASS, we are at a serious loss to what to do without more manpower, we need more people to join! Of not there is little three teens can do, perhaps if more adults join, it would be much better. Our resoures are limited...
Now here is a video on shark finning that includes an interview with director of SharkWater, Rob Stewart. You can find the video at the sidebar.I hope all you readers can learn more about shark finning through this video.

New STRASS members

Hi, here are the newest updates on STRASS:

We have two newest members: Kristy and Rachel. Kristy will be the secretary and Rachel will be the Creative Director; she will be in charge of the upkeep of the blog and so I hope all of you out there will join us in the quest of saving the sharks.

I have recently uploaded a video on bull sharks, one of the three species of sharks that are known to attack humans.Amazing creatures but can be dangerous, although many shark attacks have been reported since 1580 ,only 17 were fatal. What's more, don't you think that 1580 is a long time ago when misconception about sharks were plentiful and people tend to be bias when reporting these attacks? Anyway, you are more likely to get struck by lightning than to get attack by a shark. Most bull shark attacks are either because the person has stepped into the shark's territory (sharks are extremely protective of their territory ) or it is confused by humans or the shark is so hungry that it must eat.

So I hope you'll enjoy the video and get to learn more about sharks.

Why save the sharks?

Why should we save the sharks? So what if they dissappear? So now I'm going to provide the top ten reasons for saving the sharks and why shark finning should be stopped:

1. Sharks are at the top of the food chain in the marine ecosystem, that means they control the number of each type of fish. If they disappear, there will be this huge upset in the marine life. That means disaster for us!
2.Sharks have been around for 400 million years, that is 100 million years more than the dinosaurs! They have shaped most of the marine life to what it is today.
3.Don't you think it is amazing how sharks have survived for so long but now many species are on the brink of extinction? We have destroyed most of them, it is time we protected them.
4. Shark finning wastes protein and other shark-based products. Up to 99 per cent of the shark is thrown away.
5.The above results in the loss of sharks as a staple food for many developing countries.
6.There are huge projects and campaigns going on to save the tigers and the elephants, so why not sharks?
7.The way of killing the sharks is a way to torture them, isn't it equal to cooking a fish with it still alive but body already cooked? Isn't it equal to cutting the ears of poodles so that they look more fashionable? We all wince at these actions, so why not the same for sharks?
8.Dogs are a man's best friend. Why not sharks? Dogs do kill people at times and sharks can also be trained. This is complete biasness, isn't it?
9.Every year sharks kill 5 people, humans kill millions of sharks every year. Does that mean that the whole human population should be wiped out?
10.80% of sharks do not even make any contact with people, so they pose no harm to us at all! After all, we live on land and they live at sea. So no harm done if you do not even venture into deep waters.

So we should protect sharks, we have overlooked the importance of their existence for years. It's time we take some action.

May

Hi People!

Hello everyone, My name is May and I have just recently founded the Society for The Raising Awareness of Saving the Sharks(STRASS). As we all know, the Shark population has been decreasing rapidly over the years and Shark finning has become an increasingly popular industry, thus leading to the depletion in the number of Sharks.

As I am a Singaporean, I am aware of the fact that Singapore is the third largest consumer of shark fin soup.It is hard to find a Chinese restaurant which does not sell the dish and even food centres sell it too! I was appalled when I found a stall selling shark fin soup right in the food centre near my home, so I thought enough was enough, so I founded STRASS. Readers out there if you want to join me in the fight for sharks, please drop a note in my email address, maycy95@yahoo.com.sg. Remember to give me your contact details!

I strongly encourage everyone to watch SharkWater, it tells us about how the sharks in the world are being wiped out and the importance of saving the sharks, you can find the trailer at the sidebar.

Did you know that sharks are not what most people think they are? Many portray them to be "man-eating monsters" but no, sharks are actually quite clever. Many species of sharks possess powerful problem-solving skills, social complexity and curiosity. The brain-mass-to-body-mass ratios of sharks are similar to those of mammals and other higher vertebrate species. Therefore, most sharks will recognise a human from a prey and will not attack unless provoked.

I think that's about all for now, I will continue to post regularly and keep you informed about the actions STRASS will be taking.
